Eric Sorenson commented on an issue   Re: OS X package is broken on Ruby 1.8 I freely acknowledge that this is something of a cop-out, but I filed https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet-docs/pull/329 to clarify that we don't run, nor "guarantee" Puppet will work, on anything older than Mac OS X Mavericks. Gonna kick this over to the Community packaging project to see if it's something the releast team consider in-scope to fix. This ships with Ruby 1.9.3 but not 1.8.7 and it isn't packaged in the OS X disk image. As such, Puppet is basically broken for anyone on OS X per 3.5 who didn't, through some other means, have json already installed.
