Thus, the global substitution of '\$' is the same as substitution of "\\\$" The problem is not that the strings have to be quoted the same way, the matching string must simply correctly describe what it is that should be substituted. The fact that it works if they are quoted differently us because of the different character escape characteristics. Once a string has been created it does not in any way remember how it was constructed. Closing this as a won't fix. When the parameters for regsubst are using the same quotation mark the function works properly. But if the quotation marks are different the function does nothing and doesn't display an error.
