Joshua Hoblitt commented on an issue   Re: Replace use_cached_catalog with catalog_ttl We definitely discussed schemes for reducing the frequency at which catalogs need to be "compiled" at puppetconf2014 but I'm not actually updating the run interval, I've merely toyed with the idea. Restarting the agent via a puppet run often ends badly and I have to manually restart the agent service with mco. I did briefly try caching catalog requests via apache but quickly abandoned the idea due to the difficulty of selectively invalidating the cache per node and fear of not responding to fact changes. I do recall also discussing a strategy of attempting to determine master side if a new catalog needs to be built based on tracking the facts used in the previous catalog build and code changes. I suspect that's close to the optimal approach but the implementation complexity may be high. In terms of agent side catalog caching, this proposal would be a improvement over increasing the run_interval as at least my liberally sudo'ing users would get burned quickly. It also wouldn't require messing with the master<->agent protocol. However, I am concerned that this might slow down the convergence time of a newly provisioned node as some facts may depend on state changes to the system. Eg, a fact which determines if a utility is installed which is used as a conditional in the manifest, and the utility is installed by a package resource. I realize this would be a much more intrusive feature but what about having the agent phone home to see if it should use it's already cached catalog or retrieve a new one. That could be done as either a fast check before the agent ships facts or after. If done before the facts are sent, it saves the agent the time/load of generating the facts and a small amount of bandwidth to the master. If done after, the master potentially has much more information available to determine if a cached catalog should be used (or not). An initial implementation could call and enc like terminus to keep some complexity out of the master. Add Comment   Puppet / PUP-3392 Replace use_cached_catalog with catalog_ttl h1.
