The only way I can see that this could happen would be if you had a
rights directive (allow, deny, method, etc.) before you had specified
anything for it to apply to.  That is, if the first non-comment line
in your auth.conf file started with

    allow find

or something without a preceding path directive for it to apply to.

Does this sound like your situation?  If so, adding the appropriate
path directive should fix it.  If not, let me know and I'll dig
further.
