There are two related by independent changes here; we were being inconsistent 
with ourselves (and with RFC-1123) in regards to leading digits in domain name
labels (e.g. 3dudes.com); the first patch takes us to the now-recommended "be
generous in what you accept" model (so we'll even permit broken MS-Windows style
names).

Secondly, I reintroduced a bug in my IPv6 changes, and the tests were 
insufficient
to catch the fact.
