I predict that this will be a fulcrum of design tension in the months
ahead; it is simultaneously true that forking:

1) is but lightly used in Puppet
2) makes ports (JRuby, MS Windows, etc.) more challenging
3) may be the best (only) way to work around some of our memory leaks
4) may be unnecessary long term (e.g. when 1.9 is the norm).

So what ought we do?  It's like watching a storm forming on Jupiter;
grand, slow, inexorable forces at play and we'd have to be damned clever
indeed to say what the "best" outcome would be.
