There's some support in the master branch already for detecting if puppet is run with a filename or without a subcommand, and I've got a patch submitted (#3552) that handles all of these cases without subcommands: puppet - puppet filename.pp puppet filename.rb cat file | puppet
I still think it's worth coming up with a subcommand name for that command, though, to make it easier to talk about.
