We spoke on irc ages ago about getting extlookup into the core. You said you wanted yaml and you wanted tests, if we got that done you'd integrate it.

So I didnt have time to do that, Julian Simpson said he'd do it. Since then Julian has spent a lot of time making extlookup plugable and writing extensive tests.

You can take the core extlookup and provide it a new backend for foreman, dashboard, yaml, ldap, mysql direct, whatever strikes your fancy and the interface in the actual manifests wouldn't change. Tools like dashboard/foreman can provide UI and can resolve the requests using the same search ordering - set in site.pp as before.

Julian has also written a lot of rspec tests and whatever to keep you guys happy. I believe he's happy with the result, I've not reviewed it but last I heard we need to get some code review from actual puppet coders like from the dev list.

At this point as I said I've had enough of this, if Julian feels he'd like to take this further he's welcome to spend the time, but this is my last mail on the subject.

Hi,

I'm sorry I haven't sufficiently kept track of the work you've done on extlookup, nor did I realize you were doing it because I'd asked for it. I don't do a terribly good job of recording this kind of conversation, so I sometimes forget if I've handed out requirements like this.

We'll check out the current state of extlookup and go from there.

Thanks,
Luke
