I agree completely: most of the machines we manage via Puppet have multiple IP addresses and multiple static routes. Most don't have a default gateway at all. Currently, we've written a few custom facts to identify our various interfaces according to internal conventions, i.e. Application, Management, Interconnect, etc. But we don't really have the concept of "primary" or "default".
