As I see it, and as I usually do:

* discussion threads don't contain patch, bottom posting is preferred so
that we can read the thread a long time after and still understand all
the context/discussion.
I think we are used to read from top to bottom (maybe not in some Asian
or Arabic countries, but at least in the Western world), so that feels
more natural.

* Patch reviews:
Any important or general comments should be posted at the top as a
preamble. The rest should be inlined. I think it is also good to elide
some uninteresting parts of the patch to keep the e-mails short and
focused.
Replies to such review e-mail should be bottom-posted.
The rationale is that it is important to keep the context (both the
patch piece and the comments) geographically close so that it's easier
to continue the discussion or to re-read it. I don't think top-posting
review comments will be effective...

Yes, there is no real convention. It's not that important :)
Still I prefer and will keep bottom-posting when I can :-)
