Hello all,
After finally hunting down Nigel's presentation from MacWorld 08,
I'm raring to get this working for the various businesses my
consultancy supports. Unfortunately, I'm not having much success with
any of the installation methods available, on PPC or Intel, Leopard
10.5.6. Macports, gem, and the explanatorygap package installs have
not successfully allowed me to run client or server error-free yet,
and being the novice sysadmin, I am confused by the way there doesn't
seem to be a 'default' barebones install with config/manifest files in
the proper directories(with proper permissions) to at least get the
puppetmasted process running. I'm assuming it can then generate the
correct .conf file for the client. I understand it can't all just be
handed to me, but I would like to document the various in-between
steps and share my successes.. as soon as I get there.
I'll follow up with a post with specific errors once I get
another clean test image to verify that there are no conflicting
installations causing issues.
It could be my limited knowledge of *nix systems(the /opt
directory structure of the macports install throws me off) or coding/
scripting in general that is stopping me from seeing the obvious, but
any mac-specific pointing in the right direction would be greatly
appreciated. Sort of in the vein of what Dan Benjamin did with his
hivelogic ROR+MySQL etc. walkthrough is what I will try to emulate.
TIA,
Allister
