I'd recommend you to build custom {rpm,deb,...} packages out of your  
tarball and install these using the package native type.

This has the advantage of easy upgrades, post/pre-install and -remove  
scripts (provided your packaging system supports these) and will save  
you fileserving headaches.

You will have to setup a custom package repository though, but this  
can come in handy anyway.
