FWIW Puppet Labs could really simplify the creation of packages for linux distributions by leveraging the Open Build Service, formerly OpenSUSE Build Service. All you need to do to add a distribution is check a box and which architectures and the systems will automagically build and deploy the packages for you. For a company that deals in automation I'd think such a tool would be right up your alley;-)
