i deleted and recreated the client certificates but still the
behavior
does not change. any ideas on why this is happening or am i missing
something.

What does your puppet.conf look like? Also does 'hostname -f' appear
normal as well? This would be something I would expect if there was a
difference in short & long hostname configuration or if the puppet.conf
was overriding the client name.
