this is fixed in the later iteration (2.6.31-5~karmic1~ppa6)
please test this and re-open if the problem remains

Bug description:
The kernel fails to load at boot time the framebuffer driver for intel cards to
have a nice console. The ubuntu generic kernel does it properly, maybe a
missing drivers or kernel option?
