It seems to be the same as Bug #563555 (in generic ubuntu) -- the gdm cursor is visible again if you install metacity! (It's not enough to install metacity-common, in case you were wondering.)
I can't spot any particular files bundled with metacity that cause this. We could add metacity package to the DVD, preferably not to the CD though. Hmm.
