Ok,

I have made a .pdrc file.  Still can't load gem (for example, none of the
files added to the .pdrc load).  Do I need to add settings into pd's
file/path... and file/startup?

Yes, pure:dyne's Pd is built on vanilla Pd with externals packaged 
separately.

That's a good start.

Ah, superlibrary in that page is just a fictitious example, more 
specific examples for each library follow (if I'm thinking of the right 
page).  If a library is not listed on that page, it probably follows a 
similar pattern to the others.

You could copy the .pdrc from the livecd for a quick solution, or add 
the libraries you need when you find you need them as per the wiki page.
