you don't have to do necessarily do that. you could install another kernel
with aptitude alongside this one, although I can say that is safe to use
2.6.25-2 for audio work with intel-hda (thats what I use too).

of course it is possible to start jackd from the command line. jackd
settings are $HOME/.jackdrc, you can use that to get it running by runngin
$(cat .jackdrc) in a shell. as for qjackctl: it should work just fine with
those parameters, please post some more detailed output of all settings the
debug messages from the Messages window.
