I just tried on one of my machines and the puredyne meta package
installs fine without warning or conflicts. (I'm using Aptitude instead
of Synaptic, Aptitude being the "recommended" high level package manager
from Debian).

Can you make sure that you have the correct sources?

(~) % cat /etc/apt/sources.list
# Debian repositories
deb http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

deb http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib

# Debian Multimedia repository
deb http://debian-multimedia.fx-services.com/ lenny main
deb-src http://debian-multimedia.fx-services.com/ lenny main

# Debian GOTO10 repository
deb http://debian.goto10.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.goto10.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

And the right pining:

(~) % cat /etc/apt/preferences
hee
Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 800

And the right apt conf

(~) % cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
hee
APT::Default-Release "testing";
APT::Install-Recommends "0";

then start aptitude, update with "u", mark for upgrades with "U" and
confirm installation byt hitting twice "g"

Let's see if it works fine now.
