supercool anton !
apparently (i wanted to try but didn't yet) it's possible to do it
without installing refit on the macbook, it can be done on the stick too..
i copied an article a few days ago, don't remember the original link,
but it's here:

Hallo list,
We got a macbook on loan for a week (thanks heather !). It seems that it is
possible to boot from usb after all using grub on the usb stick amd refit on the
macbook.
*on a GNU/Linux system do :
mount the system partition of the usb key somewhere:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/
install grub on the the partition
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt --no-floppy /dev/sdb1
copy the menu.lst from the iso extra dir to /mnt/boot/grub
you might need to remove the vga=791 line from the puredyne entry in the
menu.lst file.
*on OSX
install refit
reboot with your key in and select the penguin icon
Will test some more and document properly on the wiki. booting with syslinux
seems harder and confusing but will try more.
that for now.
