yeah, maybe try the older kernel too.  I can't really tell why this happens, as 
I have a 
very similar card and X works. mmm.. fwiw, one big caveat of this puredyne 
kernel is that 
(at least on my machine) there is a mismatch between the i915 kernel driver and 
the version
of mesa which causes all sorts of trouble (no DRI for me with this kernel :/). 
I'll 
investigate more...
