There's been a huge discussion about it on LAD/LAU. As far as I understood from these email lists, pulseaudio is meant for dealing with audio from consumer/desktop audio applications, and gets integrated in various desktop environments, like Gnome and KDE. Apparently sometimes it clashes with JACK, but there are methods to avoid that and have them co-exist side by side (with PulseAudio feeding into JACK, I think). sincerely, Marije
