I knew it would be something totally obvious and stupid.  After looking at
my /etc/security/limits.conf for the hundredth time I realized there was
something very small but significant missing.  My file was like this:

@audio rtprio 99
@audio memlock unlimited
@audio nice -19

However, it should have looked like this:

@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - memlock unlimited
@audio - nice -19

I wasn't paying attention to the fact that the little - was a space holder,
and that my file wasn't following the correct syntax.  Boy, do I feel
stupid.  Hopefully my lesson might help others who are overlooking something
so simple.
