This is the point at which I usually say: How much is a new graphics card vs How much more time will I spend dicking about trying to get the existing one going?
This way you can choose something that does all the DX features you want and is open source driver supported etc. There's definitely a cutoff point beyond which a mixture of curiosity, hacking prowess and bloody minded determination can drive you. I recently spent four days trying to bring up Debian on a nano-itx style vortex processor before realising that this was a job for a serious low level kernel hacker and gracefully giving up for my long term sanity :) a.
