not sure how you feel about this but maybe you would like to try our dev 
version 
which is getting very close to being very sweet :)

its the ubuntu based version and can be installed directly from the live dvd or 
usb with sudo synaptic

the problems you mention below are one of the reasons we have moved from debian 
- was getting way to messy pinning between stable - testing - experimental - 
the 
puredyne meta package was breaking when ever any little problem arose and then 
the package manager wanted to remove the whole puredyne part of the system - 
there are ways to fix this if you get into some aptitude voodo but i would 
suggest coming over to -dev land - you will be plesently suprised i think
