hello,

slightly ot I guess since I'm only running lenny with some of the P:D
reps. but i'm getting desperate so here goes :(

anyway, I was happily supercolliding away till I reboot into my OSX
external drive for a skype session. Came back and no alsa anymore.
jack can't connect:

    loading driver ..

    apparent rate = 44100

    creating alsa driver ... hw:0|hw:0|512|2|44100|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|16bit

    control device hw:0

control open "hw:0" (No such file or directory)

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1433:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1433:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card

ALSA: Cannot open PCM device alsa_pcm for playback. Falling back to
    capture-only mode

    cannot load driver module alsa

Totem etc don't work either.
alsamixer gives me:

> alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file
> or directory

before anybody gives me a solution based on apt, my apt is broken and of
course I'd like to fix it.
upgrading and downgrading again of libc6 removed ldconfig which happens
to be essential for apt.
if i apt-get install something i get this:

> dpkg: `ldconfig' not found on PATH.
> dpkg: 1 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
> NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin
> and /sbin.
> E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

the problem seems very severe, i found one similar thread without
solution here:
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.user/browse_thread/thread/6cf45b944aa89940/fa4d13463f6601e0?lnk=raot
so ... if anybody could send me a lenny /sbin/ldconfig that might
actually help me out quite a lot. (i think?)

to make things worse still, I'm running this on an mbp, which makes
reinstallation a pain, otherwise i would've done so by now.

musicians without sound are unhappy and debian users without apt quite
the same.
so please help me :)

thanks
