Just curious, which macbook are you using?
You can tell by giving us the output of:

sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name

As far as I understand Apple, they love to change specs every day, and
in this case your graphic card might need a specific tweak to get it
working with an external display.

might be a good place to find out about those tweaks.
