That's a good suggestion for usability - I added the "soup is ready" message.

I don't think there's an easy way, but if you're keen you could create
a mirror server for packages on your local machine (or your LAN). This
is something that sysadmins do quite often to reduce network load by
cacheing packages nearby, but I haven't tried it myself.

Yes, edit /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme . When we build we have a patch
which sets it to grubsplash-puredyne-logo-simple.{png,tga}, you can do
similar.
