Hi Andrew,

it works  quite OK on my  machine which has  an intel based graphics  card. what
kind of graphics  hardware do you have,  and if its nvidia- or  ati-based do you
have the proprietary drivers enabled to get full hardware accelleration? You can
find out whether you have direct rendering enable by typing this in a shell:

glxinfo | grep Yes

should give you a line with a 'Yes' if you have it enabled. 

To me it sounds as if you don't have direct rendering (and thus its all rendered
in software on the cpu which would make it awefully slow).
