hi
I sent some mails in january about errors i was getting depending on
the configuration of Xorg. They are back. Currently my xorg.conf
looks like this
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility M6
LY [Radeon Mobility 9000]"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "BusType" "PCI"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
Option "AGPSize" "32" # default: 8
Option "RenderAccel" "false" # More stable this way
EndSection
I managed to get Xfe file manager graphics work fine in january by
disabling RenderAccel. I recently updated the xserver to the latest
version and now every time i start an openGL GLUT window (GEM,
OpenFrameworks...) the OpenGL window is full with f### up graphics,
and the cursor almost freezes. I can barely move it but the clicks
and keyboard wont work, cannot access any console or shortcut. Then
I have to force quit the computer with the power button.
I tried removing the line about the RenderAccel from xorg and yes!
that solves it... but noo! it does break the Xfe file manager
graphics again :(
am i doomed to use XFCE4 or console to work? I love using Xfe it is
really efficient and useful application.
Some info about my system:
% uname -a
Linux r2d2-laptop 2.6.31-9-rt #152-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT Thu Oct 15
05:01:14 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
% lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon
Mobility M6 LY
% glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
I paste below the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log in case it is useful
thanks for any tips...
We can't do much I'm affraid...
This is really a problem with the ati driver and you should fill a bug
against it (in launchpad, against the ati driver package, not Puredyne,
although you can link back to us with the "also affects" option so we
can tracke it as well).
yes i know. i was just hoping somebody else in the list would have the
same problem.
I remember some stuff with kernel modesettings or something like that, I
thought anton managed to get rid of his glitches, did you investigate
this? Also, really search all the bugs on freedesktop, Debian and
Launchpad about corrupted graphics with the free ati xorg driver. I
can't believe you would be the only one and/or that this issue was not
noticed so far.
If you feel like breaking your install you could always do some pining
with lucid and pull a more recent xorg...
i decided to try again to play with a custom xorg configuration. Now it
looks like it works again. The trick seems to be in commenting out the
# Option "RenderAccel" "false"
as I already said in previous mail. But then also specifying this
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
before it was XAA, which is meant to be more stable as far as i understand
I also put some other options i guess many of them are useless, i just
hope some will speed the machine a but because graphics rendering seem
slower now.
Option "AGPFastWrite" "true"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
Option "AccelDFS" "true"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true" # true faster
Option "EnableDepthMoves" "true" # falso more stable this way.
i hope this helps someone
thanks
