The default terminal I think is rxvt. You can change it's settings
editing the file .Xdefaults (there are many examples on the internet).
Or install an easier to use terminal, like xfce4-terminal. Also,
regarding the 'cannot be installed' error, did you update the
repositories before trying to install any apps?
