i see... Atoms are not very fast then, thanks. I am also considering the
T61 but this is pretty similar to X61 apart from the size and screen
resolution ... which affects the battery performance.

Battery performance is the thing you will never be sure when buying used
laptops - it all depends of how was the particular item used.
T60 is big and heavy, but fast and build without any compromises. X61
should be much lighter and smaller (this is important if you travel with
it or work with laptop directly on yur legs). But the drawbacks of X
series can be unpleasant if your work rely on good display quality - LCD
is not as bright as it should and color reproduction and viewing angle
will be probably worse (I've seen T60 and worked a little bit on it, but
my reference are T30 vs X31, so I might be all wrong with X61). X series
also tend to have agressive CPU powersaving policy, this can be really
frustrating when trying to do RT things on batteries... Check out
ThinkWiki (.org) for detailed info of what problems with Linux stuff may
occur before you buy any ThinkPad. It is like 10% of the problems you
will get with any other brand, but you will know all that may happen
before you buy anything ;)
X series (12') also have slightly smaller keys on keyboard (and no
TouchPad, this is like blessing for me).

In fact I was planning to buy MSI Wind for work (Atom based), old X31
was just something like 2x as fast, still cheaper and more reliable.

i know this is getting a bit OT but ... what about buying new batteries for thinkpads? any recomendations upon where?i can see in Ebay sellers from England but also Hong Kong (the cheapest!). The T60 i am checking out drains its battery really quick, I was wondering if a new battery would be any better. But then I read not very good reviews on battery life on this model. There is also ultrabay battery removing the DVD drive but that seems expensive.
