Your definition of "sparse" and my definition of "cruft" are colliding here.
"Sparse" == hardly used filesystem.
"cruft" == non-zeroed, *unused* sectors on the disk
Your sparse filesystem likely has a lot of cruft. The two facets aren't
mutually exclusive.
