You can acomplish this from the GUI too. Removing the disk from the VM will only remove it's use, it will be listed as unused disk, Then you can edit the line and set it up as IDE. (At first it's a bit scary I admit :) ) This is also the same procedure to change from IDE to VIRTIO later.
