could it be related to the change from cirrus to vga  from the vga adapter ?

It looks like a kernel problem. 
Not sure what exactly is the problem, but every kernel(mainline and ubuntu) 
larger 4.10 will trigger this behavior on some HW. 
Debugging take some time.
