ZFS doesn’t like RAID controllers even when they are not configured in raid
mode.

If you really want to use ZFS with it's power, get a proper HBA card (or a
RAID controller that can be flashed with IT - Initiator-target - firmware)
and you're good to go. Otherwise a simple SATA controller should do the job
in your case.

Things get trickier when you have to boot from a zfs pool though, initramfs
and other stuff need to be modified to adapt to the new situation ...
