Turning off the VMs is not necessary.
Just live-migrate the virtual machines away from the node you plan to upgrade 
and move them back afterwards.
For the duration of the update you'll have a mix of versions in the cluster but 
that should be fine.
I did this for 5.1 to 5.2 and it worked well.
