d_revalidate is invoked for every hit in the dentry cache.
If a file system believes that all its dentries are valid all the
time, it does not
bother implementing this callback.
if we return > 0, it is intended to mean success and the dentry is valid.
== 0, means we tell vfs to invalidate the dentry.
< 0, means some form of error occured while revalidating..
Therefore, in our case right now we do a lookup, compare handles,
allocate a new inode
on a mismatch, and finally do a getattr. All this we do on a hit in the dcache!
So heavily namespace operations such as lookup takes a beating.
All that said, what you are suggesting is also correct in newer kernels atleast.
Returning a 0 from d_revalidate callback will cause the VFS to drop the dentry
in the dcache and attempt a fresh lookup.
I think we can definitely do that. I am only worried that perhaps we
had done things like
this in the first place because of older kernels that we have to keep
supporting.
I hope this change does not cause pvfs2 to not work or break on older kernels...
Finally, I think we should have a time out associated with valid
entries in the dcache.
Right now, it is a pity that dcache is not being used at all by pvfs2.
If we had a timeout associated with each dentry, perhaps we can save on a few
roundtrips.. The downside is some strange errors such as the one that Emmanuel
is seeing with the NFS server workload..
