my setup is as follows :

 - 1 node is altogether pvfs2 data node, metadata server, pvfs2 client
 and nfs server.
 - 1 machine is the nfs client, no pvfs tools installed.

What kernel version are you running? I tested with 2.6.27.39 and
2.6.29.2. I suspect you could run in all sorts of trouble running
antique RedHat versions ( 2.6.9 and the likes).

Usually in my setups all metadata servers are also data servers. I
never actually tried to use a separate metadata server, I don't know if
it makes any difference though.
