You said that you tested with 1 client and 1 server and got 85 MB/s.
This is very good, given that your local disk performance is about 100
MB/s. You could at most double this speed if both nodes were data nodes,
though. A node can be both an io server and a client at the same time.

With one client and 30 servers you mentioned that you reached only 40
MB/s. Are you running the same 1 thread benchmark? 1 thread won't
perform well using PVFS; you know "P" in PVFS stands for "parallel", it
will work much better with more working threads; at least as many
threads as data nodes would be a good start.
