It looks as if it was due to -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 in the CFLAGS used
by rpm builds.  If I apply the diff from revisions 11969 and 11970 to
the 2.9.2 source and try again, it builds on RHEL6 with the -Wp in the
flags, so I think the problem is solved on that system.

For what it's worth, I tried the same for CentOS7 and Fedora 22.  Fedora
22 fails because Linux is version 4.<something>; I haven't tried to work
around that.
