Be aware, I'm no longer using lirc (IR remote) as it caused problems with o/s reboots with "already loaded" (or stale) firmwares on the hvr-1950. (I'm not sure if Mike has a better terminology on this then me, but it's the best I can do for now.) The relevant error referenced within syslog is something concerning i2c errors with s5h1411. Basically, after starting & loading lirc modules, you need to have cold-booted the hvr-1950 instead of just leaving it on with previously loaded firmwares through an o/s reboot for the hvr-1950 to init correctly. Else, the hvr-1950 become defunt. Although, lirc might work fine & dandy with your hvr-1950 as you may not have this same chip in it. For more information on this bug, you can search this mailing list for the item "s5h1411". I've yet to follow-up to the lirc dev mailing list on this issue.
