Not at all surprising. The Hauppauge devices tend to be "cost optimized" solutions without all the well designed (pre)amp front end that a higher end TV has to insure that it can properly handle both low and high signal levels. Those without the (expensive) RF meters have to just try a few things to see how it works for them. And while I would have pulled a pad (attenuator) out of the toolbox rather than using a splitter, the result is about the same.
