Good idea, Mark. Another test along these lines would be to open up a
telnet client and try to telnet to yourself. Do you correctly get a
"connection refused", or do you get some other error like "network not
present"? Windows 98 has an aweful telnet client that can be run by
doing Start->Run...->"telnet".
