Patient PWS list members - I sent this directly to Jochem by mistake;
I meant for all to see it, to see if others have run into this. I
appreciate your patience with a guy whose technical expertise is
mainly related to the 19th century...

Jochem -
Thanks for checking my server yesterday. Turns out the problem is
more complicated than I thought. The refs swiki (which you tried)
emails fine. But I can't convince new swikis to email. To make
things easier, I started with a fresh copy of comswiki 1.0 and
stepped through the following list. I'm a bit puzzled.

If you have time to explore this I'd be very appreciative. Thanks! Dan

1. install fresh version of comswiki 1.0 (no modifications at all)
2. use admin/password to change refs email notify info: add my
email + mail server, update
3.  go to refs swiki
4. change refs page, add my email for notification: it works
5. add sub-page to refs, add my email address: it works
6. go back to admin mode. create new swiki "testbasedonrefs", based on refs
7. in admin mode, change to settings, see that alertserver and
alertsender are set to inherit the settings from refs. My email and
mail server are automatically filled in.  I don't change anything;
click "go there" to see the swiki.
8. I make a change & add my email to the notify list. Nothing!
9. I go back to admin mode for "testbasedonrefs." Change alert
settings from inherit to override.
10. Try editing "testbasedonrefs" but email notify doesn't work! Strange.
11. I go back to refs swiki and make a change to see if it works
there - yep - works fine, so the mailer machine isn't the problem.

conclusions so far:
As distributed, the refs swiki will do email notify on the mac
comswiki 1.0 version
I can't get a new swiki, even one based on refs, to do the same.
Maybe I have something configured wrong, but I've made so few changes
I'm not sure what else could be wrong.

Test platform, as described here, is up and running:
http://history.misu.nodak.edu (default admin/password, too)
