I've finally managed to stop confusing myself and seem to have
succeeded in a more comprehensive fix.  Though I did take some
shortcuts in the tests as you suggested, there where some more issues
with testing unicode characters so the tests just skip things outside
of the ascii range.

testrun.org seems happy, though two of the builds (pypy, py31) seem to
be hanging on unrelated issues.
