Basically you can read 'testing' as 'the next release of Debian'.[0] When Debian releases, The 'stable' becomes 'oldstable' and 'testing' becomes 'stable'. Presently stable = Sarge (Debian 3.1). Etch (Debian 3.2) will hopefully be released around December 2006.
