Forum's are not a bad thing, but from what i've seen in the past,
mailing lists seem to work better.  The problem with forums is that
someone has to take the additional step to maintain the forum, and check
it for questions.  A forum really only works as well as the users do. 
With mailing lists, the message is delivered and easy for anyone to
reply to, but with the forums there is also the extra step of loading a
webpage and logging in just to see whats available, and then after that
proceed to answering questions.

All in all, a forum can be good if people have the time and are willing
to answer posts, but mailing lists still offer the best results.
