It can.

I don't know if you can even register for gateways with Gaim, but if 
you use Psi you can browse other Jabber servers to see what services 
they provide.

Eg, I set up an account [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I log in with Psi, and browse the server delx.cjb.net
I can register with msn.delx.cjb.net
