Sorry that I wasn't clear. Python-imaging was installed, I just removed
it to make sure pymsnt would detect it if it was missing and it did.
After that test I installed it again.

Can you make heads or tails why the avatar dir for a gif avatar is
created but remains empty? Does pymsnt store all avatars as png's and
does it use python-imaging to convert it?  I think that is where the
problem lies because all original png's do work.
